Janus’ namesake is the Roman god of time, transitions, and the road, whose two faces look to the past and the future.

Visit our Youtube Channel for an in-depth look at the design, prototyping, and production process, as well as videos on maintenance and trip logs. Read more below about some of the tenets of our classic design.

Featherbed Frame

The Featherbed frame is one of the most decorated and revolutionary designs in motorcycling history. The simple double-cradle design has been put through its paces on nearly every race course in the world, as well as on millions of consumer machines through the 20th century. It provides incredible stability and ability for our small displacement designs, while allowing easy access to all components and maintaining a low weight.

A Tradition of Classicism

We believe that that past is a great resource for today’s motorcycle designs. Motorcycles are a perfect canvas for explorations of form and function, and there is a rich centuries-long tradition of motorcycle designs that aim to strike the perfect balance between the two. At Janus, our designs seek to carry on that tradition. We don’t seek to reinvent the wheel (or the rest of the motorcycle, for that matter), but spend our time advancing and honoring the essence of two-wheeled travel.

Open & Accessible Design

We believe that understanding your motorcycle encourages confidence, which in turn, increases enjoyment. Our open and accessible design allows owners of all skill levels to learn about, maintain, and appropriately care for their motorcycle. More intricate, technologically complex systems may provide significant competitive advantages to the upper echelon of motorcycle racers in the world, but fail to provide more confidence and enjoyment to everyday riders, and in fact alienate new riders or riders looking for appropriate speed and weight for their needs.

We’ve built our business around keeping the human element in each motorcycle, merging the best of custom building with modern manufacturing. The result is a motorcycle that avoids the quirks and pitfalls of custom one-offs, but retains its one-of-a-kind soul in a market of one-of-a-million machines. Heart and soul are built into every Halcyon 250.

Watch a short montage of our manufacturing processes and learn more about the materials & details in each Halcyon 250 below.

Durable & Beautiful Materials - Stainless steel and hand-formed and welded aluminum provide corrosion-resistance and long life for our fuel tanks, exhausts, rear brake levers, pegs, and other “high traffic” components. Powder-coated DOM steel tubing comprises our strong and durable frame. Anodized aluminum rims and stainless spokes ensure long wheel life and resist corrosion. Full grain leather and durable marine-grade vinyl provides beautiful and durable seating & detail. Industrial-grade powder coat ensures durability and longevity.

Precision & Detail - From hand-laid enamel striping and graphics to precision-machined axles to hand cut-and-sewn leather components, the details of each Janus motorcycle charm owners and onlookers alike.

The Bulletproof Janus 229 - Janus’ 229cc engine is a marvel of mechanical engineering. The Janus 229 is the standard-bearer and descendant of the Honda CG-line of engines developed for complete reliability and durability under the harshest conditions. Its single cam operates both intake and exhaust valves with two stout pushrods, and lies in the base of the crankcase, sharing the oil reservoir with both the piston and transmission. Manufactured in China by one of the largest engine manufacturers in the world, it is widely used (and abused) worldwide. We have re-purposed this workhorse engine to provide easy, reliable power to our lightweight designs. In the lab, it has proven its long-term efficiency and consistency by passing the duration of US EPA and  California ARB testing (9,000km) with under half all emissions limits, with projected emissions (18,000km) also under half the limit.

Nimble and quick - All Janus models weigh about 265 pounds. The light unit weight, paired with the Janus 229 powerplant provides direct, quick power through its entire range of speeds. A 3-inch front and 3.5-inch rear tire width aids in quick acceleration. Ikon shocks and our proprietary leading-link suspension ensure direct and intuitive handling. In concert, the drivetrain and unit weight of the Janus 250 series provides surprising quickness and a uniquely thrilling direct sense of speed in everyday riding.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Where can I test ride and see a Janus Motorcycle?

In part, we're able to do what we do here because we don't have a large dealer network and massive inventory. Our motorcycles are made to order, exactly the way you want it. That also means that the primary place to try a Janus Motorcycle is at our shop in Goshen, Indiana. We have frequent Discovery Days, which includes a shop tour, test rides, BBQ & Beer, and more, or you can call and arrange a time during the week to try out any of our models. We love having guests—both out-of-town and local, and love showing off our small operation in our beloved small town.

2. How long does it take to get my motorcycle?

Our current lead time is approximately 10 weeks from order to completion (shipping- or pickup-ready). When we verify your order details, we make arrangements for your primary components to be finished in your chosen color scheme. Once those are completed, Kelly will add finishing details, pin-striping, and logos. We'll ensure all of your sub-assemblies are complete. Ryan will pick all of your components and assemble the motorcycle. Cameron will test ride it, perform our diagnostic analysis on the exhaust system, and detail it. Devin will certify it. Jaclyn will be in touch regarding shipping or pickup arrangements. Shipping time depends on your location and can vary from 1-3 weeks in addition to the 10 week completion time.

3. How do I service & maintain my motorcycle?

Our motorcycles are designed to be simple to understand and work on. We encourage our owners to perform their own routine maintenance and get to know their motorcycles. We believe that knowing your machine deepens the enjoyment of riding. We have an ever-growing YouTube channel of maintenance videos, and if there's something you don't know how to do or don't want to do, we can help you learn, or help you find a local garage that will service our motorcycles. We offer a 2-year fender-to-fender warranty, and will reimburse or pay any necessary warranty work. We do require that a Janus representative diagnose any issues before any reimbursable warranty service takes place.

We want our riders to feel comfortable, safe, and happy while riding their motorcycles, and want our riders to be riding!

We can only help if we hear from our riders. Call or email if you have any concerns or questions!

4. What's the range and MPG of our motorcycles?

All Janus models have about a 2 gallon tank (see product pages for exact specifications), and while the EPA rated our MPG in the 70+ range, we routinely get 50-65 MPG. It's a good idea to have your next gas stop in mind every 100 miles.

5. Am I too big for a Janus?

Janus Motorcycles are lightweight, small displacement motorcycles, but that does not mean they are mini-bikes. Our co-founder Richard is 6-foot-6 and rode from San Francisco to Brooklyn in 6 days on a Halcyon. The Halcyon has a 30'' seat height, the Phoenix has a 32'' seat height, and the Gryffin comes in at 33''. We have plenty of big and tall customers that love our motorcycles, and there's plenty of power left in our motor to get our lightweight frame and riders of any size up to cruising speed.

6. Am I too small for a Janus?

Janus Motorcycles have a tall seat height, but being lightweight, small-displacement motorcycles, they're easy even for petite riders to hold up. Our riders report that even on the balls of their feet, they feel perfectly comfortable at stop lights, on inclines, and moving through traffic. We offer a lowering kit for the Phoenix, which reduces the shock length by 1''. The Halcyon is the easiest model to throw a leg over.

7. Can I carry passengers on my Janus motorcycle?

Yes. We offer two types of pillion seats (with passenger pegs) for the Halcyon: a bolt-on foam pillion that works in concert with the book rack (if you carry cargo as often or more often than people), and a stand-alone fully sprung pillion seat (if you carry people more often than cargo). The Phoenix has an optional double seat and passenger peg add-on. Taking passengers on you Janus is a great idea for shorter joy rides. We encourage our riders to be aware of the change in weight distribution and center of gravity that comes doubling your payload, and emphatically encourage all passengers and riders to wear protective gear. Never ride beyond your comfort level.

8. What's the story with the Janus engine?

At Janus, we design and build motorcycles that embody the spirit of two-wheeled travel: freedom, simplicity, thrills, and pure enjoyment. We need an engine that supports and amplifies that spirit, and doesn't encumber or complicate our design or our riding experience. We need an engine that is simple and understandable, reliable, and provides ample power to accomplish our goals. We've found that solution in our 229cc air-cooled, single-cylinder, 2-valve, pushrod motor from our manufacturer in China. It's one of the most popular and widely used engine designs in the world, is tried-and-true, and is readily available. Our engine does not have an American retail name or availability (it may look like certain motors you can buy "off the shelf," but currently, you cannot). Maintenance is simple—on spark plug, one carburetor, two valve adjustments, and a quick oil change process. Operation is straightforward. It passed EPA certification with flying colors, which ensures its working stability over 9,000 km of testing. If you're skeptical about its provenance, we implore you: "Come try it!"

9. Where do you make everything?

Here and there. Click to learn more!

10. Can I get one with a sidecar?

Not yet, from the Janus factory, at least. If you're dreaming of sidecars, there are many aftermarket suppliers that can fit a sidecar to your motorcycle for you. While we're exploring the idea, we currently do not build Janus motorcycles with factory-installed sidecars. Stay tuned.

Best group to work with! I picked up my bike this August! If you haven’t ordered your bike yet, don’t wait.
— Ryan B.

"Getting to chat with everyone at Janus and test ride their products was amazing, especially after seeing the way they pour their hearts and souls into their work...This kind of spirit of customer service and entrepreneurial passion is awesome, and they bring it to life with surprising power, just like their bikes (which have a surprising amount of acceleration, by the way). You will not be disappointed!"
- Michael

"I went to their first Discovery Day and was sold on not only the bikes but also Janus and the people working there too. Their enthusiasm really shows. A couple of months later I ordered a Halcyon...This bike is really fun to ride and never fails to draw attention. One other thing, Devin, Richard and the rest of the crew at Janus are always helpful if you have any questions." -David

“I rode in the sun and the rain...and through it all, the Halcyon 250 did great! Everyone I met had questions and compliments about the bike.”
— Brandon • Halcyon #13
The bike performs flawlessly and I have to say I get more attention on this thing than any car, bike or scooter I’ve ever ridden.
— Christian • Phoenix #10

"A bike that conjures up the joy of motorcycling isn’t the sharply-aerodynamic, grossly-overpowered modern motorcycle; it’s a bike like the pared-down Halcyon or Phoenix that creates an experience for the rider, an evocation of a simpler time."

— The Wilkinson Brothers, Goodspark Garage
